"In the beginning was the Word." – John 1:1

As a faith-based institution, AHU believes strongly in the power of effective communication. Whether writing a research proposal, charting patient progress, presenting at a conference, or talking with a patient’s family, we believe that your ability to communicate effectively will be at the heart of your success as a healthcare provider.

The University Writing Center is here to help you communicate your ideas, whether they are in the form of a well-designed poster, a sharply edited video, a carefully crafted speech, or a clearly written paper. We invite you to come to the Writing Center to use our technology and talk with our consultants as you plan, draft, and revise communication in any form.

What to Expect from a Consultation

"Conversation is the laboratory and workshop of the student." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

At the University Writing Center, we believe strongly in the connection between composition and conversation. This is why we approach every consultation with you as a conversation about your work. We want to know where you are in the creative process, what is most challenging about it, and what you want to accomplish.

We are not an editing service, so you cannot drop off a paper, script, or poster for corrections. We want to talk to you, so we ask that you consider the following expectations when you make an appointment at the Writing Center.

  1. Be on time for your appointment, to ensure that our conversation is not rushed.
  2. Come prepared with the assignment sheet, notes, and other materials relevant to your project, so that our conversation can be as productive as possible.
  3. Be open to feedback (and we will be too), so that our conversation gives you honest, useful ideas about your work.

Composing is difficult, even for people who write, make movies, or give presentations all the time. So, no matter where you are in the process – brainstorming ideas, planning, drafting, or revising – we are here to help.

UWC Recurring Consultation Request

Students with more extensive writing needs can benefit from the use of tutoring repeatedly over time. Please use the attached form to work with a faculty member in arranging for such repeated sessions in the UWC. Instructions for completing and submitting the form are included on the form itself.
